Travel photography that makes people want to go
I'm Tom McGovern, a travel and hospitality photographer based in Los Angeles. For more than a decade I've shot destinations, hotels, and resorts for tourism brands and editorial titles, the kind of images that stop someone mid scroll and make them start planning a trip. A good travel photo does more than document a place. It puts the viewer there: the light, the air, the feeling of arriving.
Most of my travel work pairs the wide, transportive shots with the small human moments that make a destination feel real. A coastline at first light, then the table on the terrace where you'd actually want to sit. That mix is what turns a gallery into a story a brand can sell. I wrote about how I prep for a multi-day travel shoot if you're curious about the process.
What I shoot on a travel assignment
Most travel and destination projects pull from a few areas, and a single trip usually covers several:
- Destinations, landscapes, and cityscapes, from golden hour coastlines to architecture and street life
- Hotels and resorts, rooms, pools, grounds, and the arrival moment
- Food and dining on location, from the chef's table to the casual local spot
- Lifestyle and people, guests and locals who make a place feel lived in
- Culture and detail, the textures and small finds that give a destination its character
- Motion and social video captured alongside the stills
If you need both stills and motion from one trip, that's built into how I work. Sending one person who shoots both to the same standard keeps a travel budget sane and the look consistent across everything you publish.
Based in Los Angeles, shooting worldwide
I'm based in LA and shoot across Southern California, from the coast and the deserts to wine country and the city itself. I also travel constantly. The galleries here run from Big Sur and California wine country to Florida, the Outer Banks, Puerto Rico, Argentina, and Spain, so a single relationship can cover a flagship property at home and locations anywhere else you need.
Clients have included hotel and resort groups, tourism brands, cruise lines, and publishers. Work has appeared in Vanity Fair, Forbes, and The Wall Street Journal. You can see fuller case studies on the projects page, and the resort and tourism page covers property work in more depth.
How a travel photography shoot works
- Inquiry: Email with the destination, the dates, and what you need the images for. Most quotes come back the same day.
- Pre-production: We build a shot list and a loose schedule around light, tides, and access, so the trip runs efficiently once I'm on the ground.
- On location: I shoot light to light, scouting and adjusting as conditions change, capturing stills and motion as we go.
- Edit and delivery: A retouched, organized gallery within one to two weeks, with rush options when a campaign or press date is tight.
