Wall Street Journal – Tehachapi Grain Project
An editorial photography assignment for the Wall Street Journal documenting the Tehachapi grain revival, a movement centered on heirloom wheat varieties, small-batch milling, and the chefs and bakers who have built menus around locally grown, stone-milled flour.
The story required imagery that could carry the editorial weight of WSJ's food coverage: honest, documentary-style photography that reveals the craft and people behind one of California's most compelling farm-to-table narratives.
About the Project
Grain-to-table documentary photography for national press
Editorial food photography for major publications demands a different approach than commercial work. The Wall Street Journal assignment required Tom to work quickly across multiple locations in Los Angeles , from active mill operations to kitchen prep environments, while maintaining a consistent editorial voice throughout.
The resulting photographs ran in the Journal's food section, illustrating a story about how California's artisan grain movement is reshaping the way chefs and home cooks think about flour, bread, and provenance.
Approach & Craft
Editorial photography for food journalists and publications
Tom's editorial clients include national publications seeking a photographer who can handle both the food and the story surrounding it: producers, farmers, chefs, and the environments they work in. His documentary approach to food photography produces images that work in both digital and print editorial contexts.
Available for editorial food assignments, magazine features, newspaper food sections, and documentary food projects nationwide. Based in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
