Food photography built for how Palm Springs restaurants actually sell

I'm Tom McGovern, a food and hospitality photographer who shoots restaurants, hotels, resorts, and food brands across Palm Springs. For more than a decade I've photographed plated dishes, bar programs, and dining rooms for restaurants, hotel groups, and national food brands. The work runs in menus, on websites, across social channels, in advertising, and in print, which means every frame is made with a real placement in mind rather than as a one-off pretty picture.

Palm Springs dining is inseparable from its setting. A dinner photo here has to carry the mountains, the mid-century rooms, and that low desert light along with the plate. The valley is full of resort dining rooms, poolside bars, and design-forward independents.

The desert sits on my regular Los Angeles to Las Vegas route, so travel usually folds into the day rate rather than showing up as a separate line item. Ask when you inquire.

What I shoot

Most Palm Springs projects fall into a few buckets, and many combine several in one shoot day:

  • Plated food and signature dishes for menus, delivery apps, and press
  • Beverage and bar program photography, from cocktails to wine service
  • Dining room, interior, and atmosphere images that sell the experience, not just the plate
  • Lifestyle frames with hands, guests, and chefs to make a brand feel human
  • Food video and social motion captured alongside stills

If you need both stills and motion from a single visit, that's a deliberate part of how I work. Few food photographers shoot video to the same standard as their stills, and producing both in one session keeps budgets and schedules sane.

One relationship across markets

Restaurant groups and hotel brands rarely stop at one city. A shoot that starts in Palm Springs can extend to a Los Angeles flagship or a Las Vegas resort outlet, with one photographer holding the visual standard across all of them. Clients have included national restaurant groups, James Beard recognized chefs, luxury hotel and resort brands, and publishers. Work has appeared in Eater, The Washington Post, Forbes, and on Good Morning America. Browse case studies on the projects page.

In the Coachella Valley, I photograph food for restaurants in the Palm Springs Uptown Design District and downtown, El Paseo in Palm Desert, and resort properties in Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, and La Quinta. Independent rooms and resort outlets run on the same schedule.

How a Palm Springs food photography shoot works

  1. Inquiry: Email with your shot list, intended platforms, and timing. Most quotes come back the same day.
  2. Pre-production: Shot list finalized, styling plan confirmed, and shoot scheduled around your kitchen and dining room hours.
  3. Shoot day: On-location with portable lighting and grip. Most restaurant shoots run in the two to three hours before service when the kitchen is fresh and the room is set.
  4. Edit and delivery: Retouched, organized gallery within one to two weeks. Rush turnarounds available for launches or press deadlines.

Palm Springs food photography, answered

How much does a Palm Springs food photographer cost?

Pricing depends on the number of dishes or setups, usage rights, whether you need video alongside stills, and crew such as a food stylist. Most restaurant and brand shoots are quoted as a half day or full day with a set deliverable count. Email me with your shot list and intended use and I'll send a clear quote.

Do you charge travel for Palm Springs food photography shoots?

Rarely as a separate line item. The desert sits on my regular Los Angeles to Las Vegas route, so travel usually folds into the day rate.

Do you provide food styling, or should we hire a stylist?

Both options work. For straightforward menu and social work I often style on set. For advertising, cookbooks, or hero campaign images I bring in or coordinate a professional food stylist so I can stay focused on lighting and direction. I'll recommend the right setup once I understand the scope.

Can you shoot at our restaurant, or do we need a studio?

Most of my restaurant work happens on location during off hours, using a mix of natural and shaped light. I bring lighting and grip so the kitchen and dining room can keep moving. For packaging or tightly controlled product images, a studio day may make more sense, and I can arrange one.

How quickly are images delivered?

A typical turnaround is a retouched, edited gallery within one to two weeks, with rush options when a launch or press deadline is tight. Selects can often be delivered within a couple of days when needed.

Do you shoot video as well as photography?

Food video and social motion alongside stills, I capture both in the same session, which is the most efficient way to build a full content library without running two separate shoots.

If I search for a food photographer near me in Palm Springs, what should I look for?

Beyond portfolio quality, look for someone who understands restaurant operations, who can work within limited access windows, handle their own lighting without a large crew, and deliver images your platforms can use. I shoot in Palm Springs on a regular travel schedule.

Does Tom McGovern shoot resorts and hotel dining in Palm Springs?

Yes. Resort dining rooms, hotel restaurants, and culinary events run alongside independent restaurant work in Palm Springs, often as part of the same relationship that covers a flagship Los Angeles or Las Vegas location. See the projects page for case studies.
